The Killarney Historic Stages Rally was founded in 1996 by the event's first Clerk of the Course, Maurice Nagle, who saw a niche in the market for a rally solely devoted to historic & post-historic cars. Since then the rally has gone from strength to strength and now sees a full entry annually as well as a long reserve list.

Following a meeting between The Motor Sport Commission of Motor Sport Ireland and a delegation from Killarney and District Motor the Commission have decided to uphold the recommendation of the Rallies Committee of MI that a permit should not be issued for the 2008 Killarney Historic Stages Rally.
